E Pluribus Unum ("from many, one") was adopted by an Act of Congress in 1782 as the motto for the Seal of the United States and has been used on coins and paper money since 1795.

The Pledge of Allegiance was written in August 1892 by Francis Bellamy (1855-1931). In 1954, President Eisenhower encouraged Congress to add the words "under God," creating the 31-word pledge we say today.
